September 28th marks National Good Neighbor Day to celebrate the importance of being a good neighbor and highlights the value of a strong community. Started by the National Good Neighbor Day Movement, it is encouraged to celebrate this holiday by simply getting together with a neighbor or doing a good deed around your neighborhood.
The National Good Neighbor Day slogan reads: “Good neighbors make great neighborhoods.” Being a good neighbor is essential for building a positive and supportive community. Here are some fun ways to improve your community or neighborhood in honor of National Good Neighbor Day!
Introduce yourself:
When you move into a new neighborhood, take the initiative to introduce yourself to your neighbors. A friendly greeting can set the tone for a positive relationship.
Respect Boundaries:
Be mindful of your neighbor’s privacy and property lines. Avoid trespassing or encroaching on their space.
Keep Noise Levels Down:
Be mindful of noise levels, especially during late hours. This may include loud music, parties, yard work, or other loud equipment. If you’re planning a loud event, let your neighbors know in advance and try to limit the disturbance.
Maintain Curb Appeal:
Keep the exterior of your home in tip top shape. This not only sets a great example for your neighbors to follow, but also adds to home value and community worth.
Celebrate and Thank Your Neighbors:
By hosting a block party or creating welcome baskets for new neighbors, small gestures that bring people together can make a big difference!
Take the “Good Neighbor Day” Pledge:
“I pledge to be the “good neighbor.” With the goal of becoming a more connected and caring community, I will be a person who lives with kindness and concern for my neighbors. I’ll take the first step by connecting with neighbors and introduce myself. I will practice the “good neighbor mindset” to make connections, invitations, stay aware, and be available to my neighbors. Good neighbors make great neighborhoods.”
